Answer: Washington Color School artist Tom Downing said that Washington art emerged from the symbolic character of Washington itself, that DC was formed to be a symbol, but a speculative, open-ended one, as the Deists (not Christians) created the city - and the Constitution - to be. So we’re all mad scientists here, at best, making symbolic speculations in our aesthetic laboratories, into whatever engages our true curiosities, for better or worse...
